Box Score

Sept. 29, 2007

Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. - Four different players scored goals to lead the No. 15-ranked UC Santa Barbara Gauchos to a 4-0 shutout over UC Davis in a Big West men's soccer game in front of a sellout crowd of 1,040 at Aggie Soccer Stadium Saturday afternoon.

It marked the first official Big West contest for the Aggies, who fall to 5-2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference. The loss also snaps the Aggies' six game unbeaten streak. The Gauchos, who rank 15th in two polls and as high as 13th in another, improve to 4-2-2 and 1-0 in conference.

Each team managed to get off an identical number of shots, 15, despite the final score. Junior midfielder Ahmad Hatifie and junior forward Quincy Amarikwa led all players with five shots apiece. They also each had one shot on goal.

Junior midfielder Sule Anibaba took two shots while Nicholas Lind, Dylan Curtis and Paul Marcoux also managed to get off shots.

Gaucho goalkeeper Bryant Rueckner had three saves to earn his second shutout of the season.

Three of the Gauchos' four goals were unassisted strikes. Their first goal came in the 34th minute as Chris Pontius collected a rebound off goalkeeper Brian Wickers for the lone goal of the first half.

The Gauchos notched their second goal 13 minutes into the second half behind a score from Eric Avila, who beat Wickers one on one. Almost 20 minutes later, Jon Curry tallied the Gauchos' third straight unassisted goal off a direct kick from the top of the box.

Martin Hedevag capped the scoring as he finished a cross from Tony Chinakwe from the left corner of the box with only two seconds remaining.

In what turned out to be an extremely physical match, a total of 28 fouls were called along with four yellow cards. Each team held identical fouls and yellow card totals to go with their matching shot totals.

The Aggies held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks and managed three straight early in the first period.

UC Davis returns home Wednesday for a Big West game against UC Riverside. The game is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
