OJAI, Calif. -- UC Davis closed out its 2006-07 season Sunday with the conclusion of play at the Ojai Valley Tournament. The Aggies figured in the final of both the singles and doubles draws. In the singles final, Fresno Pacific's Jelena Pandzic defended her Ojai title with a win over the Ã…ggies' Desiree Stone. In the doubles final, Anita Athavale and Emma Shapiro fell to FPU's Anna Karavayeva and Audrey Laib.
Stone was looking to become the second UC Davis freshman in three years to take home the Florence H.R. Gorham singles trophy after Robin Guier won the event in 2005. Stone entered the final with a 4-0 record so far in the tournament, including a pair of victories on Saturday. Pandzic, the no. 1 seed, would end up defeating Stone, 6-0, 6-2.
Stone's run at the tournament upped her overall singles victories this season to a team-high 17. Coupled with her 14 wins in doubles, she finishes the year with 31 victories.
In doubles, Karavayeva and Laib defeated Athavale and Shapiro, 6-2, 6-4. The FPU duo was also the no. 1 seed. Athavale and Shapiro ended up leading UC Davis in doubles with an 19-13 overall mark.
The Aggies finished with a dual match record of 11-11 which was a seven-match improvement over 2006. The end of the 2006-07 season is also the end of the team's transition from Division II to Division I. Next season, UC Davis will be an official member of the Big West Conference.
