RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. -- Sydney Roughton of UC Davis had a 3-under 69 in Monday's first round and is in second place at 1-under 143 after 36 holes of the Big West Conference Women's Golf Championship, leading two Aggies in the top five places at the season-ending tournament.

Sophomore Jee Park is tied for fifth at 2-over 146 after firing a second-round 70 at the par-72, 6,059-yard course at Tijeras Creek Golf Club.

UC Davis, which becomes an official member of the conference next year, is participating in the 54-hole event for the second consecutive year but is not eligible to win the team title. However, if the Aggies were officially counted, they'd be in second-place behind defending champion UC Irvine at 30-over 606 after scores of 300 and 306. The Anteaters lead the tournament at 15-over 591 with Long Beach State a distant second at 42-over 618.

A hot start in the first round by Roughton gave her a two-shot lead after 18 holes. She had three birdies on the front nine and then birdied the first two holes on the back to go to five-under after 11 holes. She stayed that way until bogeying two of her final three holes.

Roughton, whose 69 tied her low round of the season, birdied three of the four par-five holes on the course in the first round. She played both sides of her second round one shot over par and trails leader Patty Chawalitmetha of UC Irvine by four strokes. Chawalitmetha had a 66 in the afternoon to charge into the lead. Kay Hoey of Long Beach State is in third place at par 144 while defending medalist Selanee Henderson of UC Irvine is in fourth at 1-over 145.

Park opened her day with a 76 before a steady round with 14 pars, three birdies and a bogey delivered her a season-best 70 in the second. Park posted all three of her birdies on the front nine to make the turn at 3-under 33.

Kelsey Fischer shot in the 70's during each of her rounds on Monday and is tied for 13th at 12-over 156 after rounds of 77 and 79. Bryana Gregory was just two shots over par during the back nine of her opening-round 78 and finished the day in 16th at 15-over. Kimberly Johnson is tied for 26th at 166.

The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday.
