DOVE CANYON, Calif. -- Kimberly Johnson fired a 2-over 73 in Monday's second round and is in eighth place at the Anteater Invitational, being hosted by UC Irvine at the 5,924-yard Dove Canyon Country Club, as the UC Davis women's golf team finished the first 36 holes in third place.
Johnson led a trio of Aggies among the top 15 places, a group that also includes Bryana Gregory, who is tied for ninth and Jee Park, who is tied for 14th.
UC Davis, which has been idle since competing in the Fresno State Kitahara Invitational last month, had rounds of 314 and 310 and is in third place at 56-over par 624, just one shot behind second-place San Jose State. Host UC Irvine holds a commanding 26-shot lead over the Spartans after rounds of 299 and 298. Mississippi is four shots back of UC Davis in fourth place.
Selanee' Henderson of UC Irvine carded scores of 69 and 72 and is at 1-under 141 to hold the early individual lead. She is in front of second-place Sirapa Kasemsamram of San Jose State by seven shots.
Aggies had two rounds near par on Monday. Gregory had the team's best round when she fired a 1-over 72 in the first round while Johnson rebounded from an opening-round 80 and had an impressive 73 in the second. Johnson, a freshman from San Diego, is in eighth at 153. Gregory is tied for ninth just one shot behind Johnson.
Park is also among the leaders after rounds of 79 and 77 tied her for 14th place. UC Davis junior Sydney Rouhgton is tied for 36th at 163 after covering the final 18 holes with a 79. Sophomore Kelsey Fischer is tied for 42nd at 164 after an 81 in the second round.
Brittany Smith, competing as an individual for UC Davis, posted scores of 82 and 81 and is tied for 36th place.
The Aggies are attempting to continue a run where they have finished either first or second in more than half of their tournaments this season.
Tuesday's final round begins at 8:30 a.m.
