Utah Valley State Defeats Men's Basketball, 88-59

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley State was led by reserves Joe Walker and Ryan Toolson, who had 22 and 20 points, respectively, in the Wolverines' 88-59 victory over the UC Davis men's basketball team in Orem, Utah Tuesday evening. The win completes the season sweep for Utah Valley, who defeated the Aggies in the teams' first-ever meeting earlier this season in Davis.

With the win, Utah Valley State improves to 16-7 overall while the Aggies fall to 4-18 on the season.

Aggie senior Thomas Juillerat led the team with 17 points -- his fifth consecutive game with 10 or more points and 14th of the season -- while Dominic Calegari had 14 points. Rommel Marentez and Ari Warmerdam each added seven points. Juillerat also had seven rebounds.

The Wolverines shot 54 percent from the field and 81 percent (22-of-27) from the free throw line, but managed just 2-of-11 three point attempts. The Aggies were limited to 42 percent from the field and connected on just 3-of-13 three point attempts.

In the first half, the Aggies opened up an 11-4 lead after a jumper by freshman Bussey Ellis at 14:28 and were able to push their lead to 12 points, 27-15 when Juillerat hit a pair of free throws five minutes later. After that, Utah Valley State used a 15-3 run and eventually tied the game at 30 with just over four minutes to play in the first half. The game was tied two more times, the last at 34 after two free throws by Toolson, but the Wolverines closed out the final two minutes on a 7-0 run to lead 41-34 at halftime.

UC Davis shot 46 percent in the first half and was 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Juillerat was near-perfect, converting of 4-of-5 shots from the field and 3-of-3 from the free throw line while Dominic Calegari shot 3-of-4 from the field and 3-of-3 from the line.

Early in the second half the Wolverines stretched their lead to 16 points after a layup by David Heck at 17:25. Warmerdam hit a jumper a minute later to pull the Aggies within 12 points.

After a pair of free throws by Juillerat at 13:05 the Aggies pulled within 11 points, 56-45, but it was as close as they got as Utah Valley State eventually extended its lead to 28 points with three minutes left in the game.

UC Davis next travels to Cal State Northridge to face the Matadors Feb. 14 at 7 p.m.
