BEAUMONT, Calif. UC Davis' Bryana Gregory and Sydney Rougton each shot even-par 72's on Monday to share the individual lead at the Lady Braveheart Challenge hosted by UC Riverside, and helping the Aggie women's golf team to a share of first place with San Diego State after the first round.
UC Davis, playing its first tournament of its spring season, shot a team score of 21-over 309. Jee Park is tied for 13th after a 79, Eryn Williams is tied for 58 with an 86 and Lauren Dobashi is tied for 70th at 88. The Aggies' Kimberly Johnson, playing as an individual, had a 79 and is also tied for 13th.
The Aggies and Aztecs share a 10-shot lead over third-place Cal Poly with Sacramento State 15 shots off the pace and Portland one shot behind the Hornets. The 36-hole tournament, being played at the 6,080-yard Oak Valley Golf Club, has 17 teams competing.
San Diego State and UC Davis are no strangers to the top of the leaderboad at the tournament, having finished 1-2, respectively, last year. Jackie Kazarian shot a 76 to lead the Aztecs on Monday and is in fourth place while Alana Erlandson is tied for fifth after a 77. Jennifer Bermingham of host UC Riverside occupies third place at 73.
Roughton, a freshman from Davis, tied for the best nine-hole score of the day after firing a 35 on the back while Gregory had matching 36's to collect her par round.
UC Davis is looking for its second consecutive tournament win after ending the fall season with a victory at the Cal Poly Invitational in November. The tournament concludes with the final round on Tuesday morning.
