JACKSON, Miss. - Jackson State defeated UC Davis, 81-57, Friday night in non-conference men's basketball action in Jackson, Miss. The Tigers used a 27-2 run spanning the end of the first half and beginning of the second half to put the game away. Three Aggies finished in double-figures, led by Vince Oliver's 16 points. Kyle Brucculeri scored 14, and Shane Hanson had 10. JSU's Grant Maxey led all scorers with 19 points.
UC Davis (5-6) led 9-4 early behind a strong start by Oliver. The junior scored six of the team's first nine points. Brucculeri connected on one of his two treys during the initial burst as the Aggies built what turned out to be their largest lead less than three minutes into the game.
Jackson State (2-10) responded with an 11-3 run, capped off by a Maxey layup with 13:25 left in the half, and led 15-12. Hanson's first three-pointer tied the game at 15-all before the Tigers regained a 21-17 lead at the midway point of the first half.
The Aggies battled back with a 7-2 run that was started by another Hanson trey and ended with a layup by Ryan Silva, giving UC Davis a 24-23 lead with 9:02 left in the half. The lead turned out to be the last for the Aggies as the Tigers led by five points less than two minutes later. UC Davis cut it to 33-31 on a David Carter layup at the 4:52 mark before Jackson State closed the half on a 7-0 run and led 40-31 at the break.
It was all Jackson State to start the second half as the Tigers scored the first 10 points of the half and led 50-31 with 15:44 left in the game. A field goal by Michael Boone 15 seconds later gave UC Davis its first points of the half before JSU ran off another 10 points to build its lead to 60-33 at the 12:21 mark.
JSU would lead by as many as 29 points with 2:03 left in the game.
Jackson State (2-10) shot 56 percent from the field while holding UC Davis to 43 percent. The Aggies shot 39 percent in the second half, compared to the Tigers' 58 percent.
UC Davis is next in action Dec. 29 when it plays at UCLA.
