Final Stats

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Brown used a 13-0 run in the final five minutes to hold off a UC Davis rally and defeated the Aggies, 73-57, Saturday night in Providence, R.I. UC Davis had pulled to within three points after a 17-5 run before the Bears shut the Aggies out the rest of the way. Ryan Silva led UC Davis with 13 points, and Shane Hanson scored 12. Brown's Mark McAndrew led all scorers with 18 points.

Brown (4-3) opened the game by outscoring UC Davis (4-3) by the 12:41 mark of the first half. The Aggies came back with a 14-4 run, which was capped off by a David Carter three-pointer with 8:12 left in the half. That tied the game at 17-17. The Bears responded with an 11-3 run to open up a 28-20 lead and settled for a 35-28 lead at the half.

Both teams traded points in the opening five minutes of the second half, and Brown owned a five-point lead with 15:36 left in the game after a jumper by Hanson. The Bears then surged with a 12-2 run and opened up a 55-40 bulge at the 10:11 mark.

That's when UC Davis began using full court pressure to generate turnovers and start a 17-5 run. The Aggies would run off nine straight to start the blitz. A dunk by Dominic Calegari followed by a Nathan Clark layup preceded a Silva trey with 8:38 left to make it 55-49.

The Bears came back with a 5-0 run before UC Davis ran off eight more points. The final three points came on another Silva three-pointer as the Aggies cut the lead to just 60-57 with 5:24 to play.

That would be as close as UC Davis would get as the Bears scored the game's final 13 points.

"We came out and started back on our heels, and on the road you can't do that," said UC Davis head coach Gary Stewart. "I give our kids credit. We fought hard and worked our way back into the game on two different occasions. We had some opportunities, but we just didn't capitalize on them."

UC Davis shot 32 percent while Brown was 50 percent from the field. The Aggies were outrebounded, 40-24, but forced Brown into 19 turnovers.

Vince Oliver finished the game with eight points, and Mark Payne had five. Hanson led the Aggies with five rebounds.

Damon Huffman and Chris Skrelja each added 15 for Brown. Scott Friske led the game with seven rebounds.

UC Davis is next in action Monday when it concludes its road trip at Dartmouth. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. Pacific time.
