BROOMFIELD, Colo. Freshman Chelsea Stelzmiller, playing in her first tournament as a member of the UC Davis women's golf team, fired a 3-under 69 on Tuesday morning to jump 29 places in the final standings as the Aggies finished fifth at the Heather Farr Memorial Invitational, hosted by Colorado.
Junior Bryana Gregory enjoyed another oustanding tournament for UC Davis, finishing in a tie for third at 3-over 219. Kayla Morinaga of Portland State followed her 69 in the second round with a 71 in the third to win by two strokes at 2 under 214.
Host Colorado broke a first-day tie with Oklahoma to shoot a 297 team score in the final round and post a four-shot victory over the Sooners at 21-over 297. Idaho was third at 26 over while Colorado State was one shot ahead of the Aggies in fourth. UC Davis completed the 54-hole tournament at the par-72, 6,211-yard at 36-over 900.
Stelzmiller, from Union Mine High School, shot rounds of 78 and 76 on Monday, ending the first two rounds in a tie for 47th place. She started Tuesday on the eighth hole, double-bogeying the par-4 ninth. However, she blistered the back nine, carding six birdies and covering those nine holes in a sparkling 6-under 30. She ended her first Aggie event at 7 over 223.
Gregory, who tied for 18th in her season-opener at Denver in mid-September, was near the top of the leaderboard throughout the tournament, entering Tuesday's final round in a tie for second. She had a 76 over the last 18 holes - the second-best score for the Aggies - and finished in a tie for third. Gregory had a pair of birdies in her last round.
Senior Sydney Roughton had a 77 on Tuesday while playing the back nine in even par. She tied for 30th at 227. Jessica Yam and Kimberly Johnson each had 82's in the final round and tied for 49th and 59th, respectively, in the 100-player field.
UC Davis will resume action on Oct. 15-17 when it travels to the Price's "Give 'Em Five" Intercollegiate, hosted by New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M.
