RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Davis closed out its three-match road trip Sunday with a 5-2 loss at UC Riverside. The Highlanders won a grueling doubles point before winning four times in singles. Two of those wins came in three sets. Robin Guier did not lose a game in picking up her second straight win. Yuka Otaka also picked up a win for the Aggies.
UC Riverside (5-12) won two of the three doubles matches to claim the first point of the contest. Catrisha Cabanilla and Yasaman Sakhakorn defeated Jenna Kappel and Nancy Mok, 8-6, at No. 2. At virtually the same time, Colette Chau and H.R. Espiritu posted an identical 8-6 win at No. 3 over Emma Shapiro and Audrey Wingo. The remaining doubles match went to UC Davis, as Guier and Ally Muller outlasted Casey Cross and Erynne Oki, 9-8.
UC Davis (4-15) won the first set in four of the six singles matches. UCR was able to battle back and win two of those matches. Guier was the first to finish as she cruised past Sakhakorn, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 to tie the match at 1-1. The Highlanders took a 2-1 lead as Oki posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kappel at No. 3.
The Aggies tied it at 2-2 when Otaka finished her match at No. 6 with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Eri Yoshimoto. The final straight sets match of the day was at No. 1 where Cross defeated Muller, 6-4, 6-1 to give UCR the lead for good. The other two matches went three sets as Cabanilla came back to defeat Mok, 0-6, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5 to give UC Riverside a clinching 4-2 lead. Espiritu also came back after a first set defeat and claimed a 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Wingo at No. 4.
"The doubles point was a huge point today," said UC Davis head coach Bill Maze. "It was a battle for both teams that lasted well over an hour."
"I thought we played pretty well considering it was our third match on the road in as many days," said Wingo.
UC Davis is next in action April 12 when it hosts Cal State Northridge at 2 p.m. at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Aggies will conclude their dual match schedule April 14 against San Jose State.
