ST. GEORGE, Utah - Danielle Cvitanov fired a 3-over par 75 on Monday and is tied for eighth place, pacing the UC Davis women's golf team to an seventh-place tie after the first round of the 54-hole BYU Dixie Classic, being played at the par-72, 6,151-yard Entrada at Snow Canyon golf course.
UC Davis shot a team score of 29-over 317 over the first 18 holes of the 19-team tournament and is tied with Northern Arizona. No. 24 New Mexico was the only team to break 300 on the first day of the tournament, shooting 11-over 299 to take a two-shot lead over No.10 UNLV and a nine-shot advantage over third-place Idaho.
The Aggies are just one shot behind Iowa for sixth place, and trailed host fifth-place BYU by two shots and fourth-place New Mexico State by four. Boise State and Nevada each shot 321 and are tied for ninth place behind UC Davis and Northern Arizona.
Cvitanov was just one shot over par on the front nine of the course and only two shots over par on the back, finishing her day with two birdies, five bogeys and 11 pars. Her 75 was the only sub-80 score for UC Davis in the first round and tied Cvitanov with six other players for eighth place in the 102-player field.
Cvitanov, who won the Cal Poly Invitational and was second at the Bronco Invitational during the fall, is just one shot out of a tie for fourth-place. Seema Sadekar of UNLV has a two-shot lead on the field after firing a 2-under par 70. Giselle Claux of New Mexico and Jennifer Tucker of Idaho are tied for second.
The Aggies' Kelsey Fischer and Eryn Williams are both tied for 32nd in the tournament after shooting 8-over 80's on Monday. Fisher and Willaims were each 4-over on both the front and back nines. Bryana Gregory had an 82 to tie for 50th and Jee Park an 83 to finish in a tie for 55th for UC Davis.
UC Davis, ranked 67th nationally, is one of 13 teams ranked in the top 100 that are participating in the event. Tenth-ranked UNLV is the highest-ranked team in the tournament.
The second round of the BYU Dixie Classic is set for Tuesday morning with the final round scheduled for Wednesday.
