OJAI, Calif. - UC Davis put up a strong performance on Thursday's opening day at the 106th Annual Ojai Valley Tournament. The Aggies fielded three players in the women's independent colleges singles bracket as well as two teams in doubles. In all, UC Davis went 7-1 in opening round action. Robin Guier had two wins in singles and one in doubles while the duo of Jenna Kappel and Nancy Mok went 2-0 in doubles.
In singles, both Audrey Wingo and Robin Guier collected wins in the round of 64. Wingo defeated Kelsey Smith of Colorado College, 6-3, 6-4, while Guier cruised past Cal State Los Angeles' Isis Jackson, 6-0, 6-1. Ally Muller received a first round bye.
In the round of 32, Fresno Pacific's Jelena Pandzic defeated Wingo, 6-0, 6-1. Guier moved on with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Jessica Nagasako of Claremont-Mudd Scripps Colleges. Muller began her singles campaign with an easy 6-0, 6-1 victory over California Baptist's Crissy Lee.
In doubles, the round of 64 featured a 6-3, 6-0 win by Kappel and Mok against Rebekah Kolstad and Hannag Leake of Master's College. Guier and Muller received a first round bye and went on to defeat Biola's Brie Meister and Becca Nations, 6-0, 6-0, in the round of 32. Kappel and Mok were equally successful in their second round match in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Whittier College's Jennifer Pigott and Vika Soshima.
Action continues Friday as both Guier and Muller have singles matches scheduled in the morning in the round of 16. With victories, they would move on to Saturday's quarterfinal round.
Friday's doubles slate has both of the Aggies' team playing in the round of 16 at 2 p.m. The quarterfinal round will take place late Friday afternoon.
