Hawaii Pacific Edges UC Davis, 5-4

March 28, 2006

HONOLULU, Hawaii - In a tightly contested match, Hawaii Pacific defeated UC Davis, 5-4, Monday evening in women's tennis action in Honolulu. The teams played singles first, and the Sea Warriors won four out of six to take a 4-2 lead heading into doubles. HPU then took two out of three in doubles to clinch the match. Emma Shapiro picked up wins in both singles and doubles to help lead the UC Davis attack.

In singles, Jenna Kappel was the first to finish as she claimed her second win of the day. This time, it was a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4 over Lauren Shin. Shapiro followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ariadna Verdejo at No. 6 to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead.

HPU (7-6) would go on to win the remaining four matches in singles. The last two to finish were both three-setters. At No. 5, Josefine Paulie defeated Jessica Harris, 6-1, 6-7, 6-1 to make it 3-2 HPU. Anastasia Ageychik followed at No. 1 with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 win over Ally Muller to give HPU a two-point cushion heading to singles.

The Aggies entered doubles play needing to win all three matches to claim the team victory. Shapiro and Audrey Wingo were the first to finish, defeating Paulie and Verdejo, 8-3 at No. 3. Robin Guier and Muller did the same at No. 1, posting an 8-5 win over Elena Hudzikova and Shin which tied the match at 4-4. The clinching match came at No. 2 where Ageychik and Isidora Ljuri outlasted Kappel and Nancy Mok, 8-3.

The match was the second of the day for the Aggies, who faced Hawaii earlier in the day. It was originally scheduled for Sunday but was postponed due to rain. The contest also ended a three-match swing in Hawaii that saw the Aggies go 1-2.

"I was proud of our players," said UC Davis head coach Bill Maze. "While we would have preferred a better end result, we had the opportunity to play in close matches out here which will help our team. It was fortunate we were able to get all of our scheduled matches in considering the amount of rain we've seen while on the trip."

UC Davis (3-12) is next in action April 5 when it plays at Sacramento State.
