DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis picked up a 5-2 victory over Weber State in women's tennis action, Monday afternoon, at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Aggies won four of six matches to clinch the victory in singles before winning the doubles point. Robin Guier did not lose a game in her straight sets victory in singles. UC Davis won three points in singles from matches that went three sets. The clinching match came at no. 5 where Nancy Mok came back from one set down to win in three sets.
Guier was the first to give UC Davis a point when she cruised past Alexandra Ilie, 6-0, 6-0, at no. 2. The Wolverines tied it when Karla Pretorius defeated Jenna Kappel at no. 4, 6-2, 6-3.
UC Davis (2-10) took a 2-1 lead on Kaitlin Callan's 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory at no. 6 over Gabriela Venditto. The lead was short-lived as Weber State (3-6) tied it again with a three-set victory from Inalise Pienaar at no. 3.
At the same time, Ally Muller and Mok were busy battling in the third set of their matches at no. 1 and no. 5, respectively. Muller was the first to finish when she outlasted Elana Smit, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. That put the Aggies up 3-2.
At no. 5, Mok had already lost the first set to Ashley Schapper, 6-4. She evened things by taking the second set 7-5. The third set was all Mok's as she lost just two games on her way to the come-from-behind 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory. That gave UC Davis a 4-2 lead, clinching the win for the Aggies.
In doubles, Kappel and Mok won at no. 1 while Callan and Wingo did the same at no. 3.
"It's certainly nice to get a win. It's nice to get some validation after all of the hard work we've put in," said UC Davis head coach Bill Maze. "Four of the six singles matches went three sets. Our team showed a lot of heart, and I'm proud of them for that."
UC Davis is next in action March 25 when it takes on Hawaii-Hilo in Honolulu. It's the first of three matches for the Aggies in Hawaii. In addition, UC Davis has rescheduled its match against Cal State Fullerton that was rained out on Sunday. The two teams will now play April 7 in Fullerton.
