STOCKTON, Calif. - The UC Davis women's tennis team was defeated by no. 63 Pacific, 5-2, Saturday in Stockton. The match was the third straight for UC Davis, all on the road, against a ranked team. The Tigers swept doubles to take a 1-0 lead before winning four of six in singles. Robin Guier and Nancy Mok each posted wins in singles for the Aggies.

Trailing 1-0 heading to singles, UC Davis (0-3) fell behind 2-0 when Helen Schneider defeated Emma Shapiro, 6-3, 6-2, at no. 6. Pacific (3-1) made it 3-0 with a win at no. 3 and clinched the team victory when Caria Tamborini defeated Jenna Kappel, 6-3, 6-4, at no. 4.

The next two matches went to the Aggies. Mok started it with a 6-4, 6-4 win at no. 5 over Ciara Schuhmacher. Guier followed at no. 2 with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Vana Mrazovic that made it 4-2. At no. 1, Muller fell in a battle against Natalia Kostenko, 6-3, 5-7, 13-11.

"I'm very encouraged because Pacific was a team that dominated us last year," said UC Davis head coach Bill Maze. "I didn't think we played well in doubles, but we had two good wins at no. 2 and no. 5 singles and nearly a third at no. 1. We're showing Big West teams we can play with them."

UC Davis next faces Sonoma State Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in its home opener.
