DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis was defeated by Saint Mary's, 7-0, in women's tennis action, Saturday afternoon, at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. Saint Mary's (4-3) entered the match tied for no. 75 in the nation and swept UC Davis (1-7) in doubles and singles play.
In doubles, SMC's Jessica Hoath and Aude Lambert defeated UCD's Robin Guier and Ally Muller, 8-4. Kate Harden and Kristin Kummer posted an 8-6 win at no. 2 over Nancy Mok and Audrey Wingo. The result was identical at no. 3 where Stef Ordoveza and Erin Young defeated Jessica Harris and Jenna Kappel.
In singles, the Gaels won five of the six matches in straight sets. Lambert defeated Guier's five-match winning streak with a 6-2, 6-2 win at no. 1. Hoath was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at no. 2 over Muller. Harden and Young also used just two sets to win at no. 3 and no. 4, respectively.
At no. 5, UCD's Yuka Otaka won the first set against Kummer before eventually falling 1-6, 6-3, 6-0. Ordoveza was also a winner at no. 6.
"Saint Mary's is the best I've ever seen them," said UC Davis head coach Bill Maze. "We fought hard, but now we have to get ready for UC Santa Barbara. I think the team has a good attitude and realizes this is a process. We'll just keep plugging away."
UC Davis is next in action March 4 when it faces UC Santa Barbara on the road. The match is the first of a two-match road swing that concludes the following day at Cal Poly.
