DAVIS, Calif. - Tyler LaTorre and Jimmy Goetz each three hits while UC Davis slammed seven doubles during the Aggies' 9-1 nonconference baseball victory over Utah on Saturday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
The teams have split the first two games in their three-game weekend series with UC Davis improving to 5-3 and Utah dropping to 3-5 after Saturday's result. Right-hander Vince DeCoito scattered seven hits over five innings, moving his record to 1-1 for the Aggies, while Brad McAtee came on to throw four innings of scoreless relief and earn his first save.
The Aggies had 13 hits during the game, eight of them extra-base hits. Third baseman Evan Hudson and LaTorre each had a pair of doubles while Brandon Oliver, Lukas Kirby and Goetz each had one. Left-fielder Aaron Hanke had a triple.
Second baseman Bret Baldwin had a trio of singles for Utah, which also got a solo home run from shortstop Ryan Khoury, who finished with two of the Utes' eight hits. Eric King fell to 1-1 after lasting just 2.1 innings on the mound and giving up six runs.
The Aggies gave DeCoito all the support he would need thanks to a five-run second inning which featured a pair of doubles and a triple. Hanke tripled to left-center field to start the frame, scoring on LaTorre's single to center for a 1-0 UC Davis lead.
The Aggies later loaded the bases with a hit, a fielder's choice and an error, leading to a long sacrifice fly to right by David Huffman that plated Goetz. Oliver's double to left scored two more runs while Hudson's double to left brought around Oliver.
Khoury got Utah on the scoreboard with his leadoff homer in the third, his second home run of the season, but UC Davis got the run back in the bottom half of the inning when Goetz singled in LaTorre, who had reached with a double.
Kirby's double down the left-field line in the seventh inning off Utah reliever Greg Krause scored Hudson while an RBI double by Goetz and sacrifice fly by Dempsey in the eighth scored the Aggies' final two runs.
"Today we came out a little more focused and ready to play," said Aggie coach Rex Peters. "We got some good at-bats with guys on base, put (those five runs) up early and gave Vince a chance to relax and just pitch. It was a good bounce-back game for him after a rough start last week so that's a positive sign."
DeCoito gave up just the one run while striking out four and wailking only one, giving way to McAtee after five innings. McAtee allowed just one hit over the final four innings, striking out three with two walks.
Krause pitched 3.2 innings of relief for Utah while Jason Williams went the final two.
UC Davis and Utah finish their weekend set on Sunday with an 11 a.m. game at Dobbins Stadium. Justin Fitzgerald (1-0) is scheduled to get the start for the Aggies while Utah will send Lucas Trinnaman (0-1) to the hill.
