ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. - Sydney Roughton finished in second place on Tuesday after shooting her second straight 75, leading three Aggies in the top 10, as the UC Davis women's golf team successfully defended last year's title with a nine-stroke victory at the Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational, played at Cypress Ridge Golf Course.
Besides Roughton, UC Davis had high finishes by Bryana Gregory who tied for fourth at 6-over 152, and Kelsey Fischer who tied for seventh at 153. The Aggies' Eryn Williams provided one of the tournament's top highlights when she used a six-iron to ace the 170-yard 17th hole. Williams used the hole-in-one to score a 79 on Tuesday, finishing in a tie for 20th at 158.
UC Davis, which led by two shots after shooting a 7-over 299 on Monday, had the day's best round on Tuesday as well when it shot 313. Scores were higher during the final day as players fought warm and windy conditions.
Sacramento State took second at 621, UC Riverside was fourth at 625 and host Cal Poly finished fourth at 628. Nineteen teams competed in the event.
Jennifer Bermingham of UC Riverside captured medalist honors after following her opening-round 72 with a 73. She posted a five-shot win over Roughton, who had a 75 for the second straight day. Cal Poly's Stephanie Yocum was third at 151.
Gregory had a 78 for the Aggies on Tuesday while Fischer, who led after Monday with a 71, had an 82. Brittany Smith shot an 81 to finish at 163 and in a tie for 34th while Lauren Dobashi, playing as an individual, fired an 80 and tied for 22nd at 159.
UC Davis, which also had a pair of second-place finishes and a fourth-place showing during its five-tournament fall season will resume action in February at the Lady Braveheart Challenge.
