ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. -- Sophomore Kelsey Fischer shot a 2-under par 71 on Monday and is tied for the individual lead as the defending champion UC Davis women's golf team took a two-shot lead after the first round of the Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational, being played at the 6,019-yard Cypress Ridge Golf Course.
The Aggies shot a team score of 7-over 299 in the first round and were the only team to break 300 on the first day of the 36-hole tournament. UC Riverside is in second at 301, Sacramento State is in third at 306 and host Cal Poly is fourth at 311.
Fischer, who shot a 35 on the front nine and a 36 over the back, is tied for first with Allison Ek of UC Riverside who matched Fischer's nine-hole scores. Both players had four birdies and a pair of bogeys. The Highlanders' Jennifer Bermingham is in third place, one shot off the lead.
The Aggies had two other players in the top 10. Bryana Gregory is in fifth after firing a 74 while Sydney Roughton is tied for sixth with a 75. Eryn Williams is tied for 21st at 79 while Brittany Smith is tied for 40th after shooting 82. Freshman Lauren Dobashi, playing as an individual, is tied for 21st as well.
Nineteen teams are entered in the tournament, which concludes with its final round on Tuesday.
