UC Davis Takes On No. 59 Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. - The UC Davis women's tennis team opened its spring season Saturday afternoon, dropping a 7-0 decision to Arizona in Tucson, Ariz. The Wildcats, ranked no. 59 nationally, won all three doubles matches to claim a 1-0 lead before taking all six singles matches.

In doubles, Ally Muller and Nancy Mok were defeated by Stephanie Balzert and Juliette Mavrolen, 8-3, at no. 1. At no. 2, Robin Guier and Jenna Kappel fell 8-3 to the team of Iza Ferreira and Kasia Jakowlew. At no. 3, it was Arizona's Tina Razloznik and Jessie Rochefort defeating Emma Shapiro and Audrey Wingo, 8-2.

Arizona (3-0) claimed all six singles matches in straight sets with the exception of no. 2 where Danielle Steinberg fought off Guier, 5-7, 6-0, 11-9. Balzert, Mavrolen, Kasia Jakowlew, Razloznik and Camelia Todorova also picked up wins for the Wildcats.

"I was pleased with our team's effort today," said UC Davis head coach Bill Maze. "Our goal was to come in and be competitive in every match, and I thought we did that today."

UC Davis (0-1) concludes its two-match road trip Sunday when it faces Arizona State at 9 a.m. PST. The Sun Devils enter the match 2-0 and ranked no. 26.

1. Balzert/Mavroleon (UA) d. Muller/Mok (UC Davis), 8-3.
2. Jaklowlew/Iza Ferreira (UA) d. Guier/Kappel (UC Davis), 8-3.
3. Razloznik/Rochefort (UA) d. Wingo/ Emma Shapiro(UC Davis), 8-2.
