LONG BEACH, Calif. - UC Davis was defeated by Long Beach State, 77-48, Monday night in men's basketball action at the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers used 66 percent shooting in the second half to pull away from the Aggies, who were led by Vince Oliver's 14 points. Jesse Lopez Low added 10 points. Shawn Hawkins led all scorers with 24 points and posted a game-high 11 rebounds.
Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half as both shot just 32 percent from the field. After making their first two field goals and leading 4-2, the Aggies went through their longest drought of the night. Long Beach State (5-6) held UC Davis (3-9) scoreless for over seven minutes while scoring 10 straight points and led 12-4 at the 11:12 mark.
The 49ers led 15-6 with 8:26 left in the half before the Aggies scored five straight points. A three-pointer by Phil Rasmussen, who finished with seven points, along with a jumper by Oliver made it 15-11 with under six minutes left in the half. The 49ers responded with a 13-6 run and led 28-17 before Kyle Brucculeri made a three-pointer with one second left to make it 28-20 heading into halftime.
The second half proved more decisive for Long Beach State as it outscored UC Davis 49-28. The 49ers opened the half on a 10-4 run and led 38-24 at the first media timeout. The margin ballooned to 47-30 on a three-pointer by Jibril Hodges at the 11:33 mark. Long Beach State, which made 19 of its 29 field goal attempts in the second half, led by as many as 30 points with 2:13 remaining.
"We got worn down, and that aided in Long Beach's ability to get perimeter shots because our rotations were slower in the second half," said UC Davis head coach Gary Stewart.
"We're not playing well as a team, but individually we're seeing progress in certain individuals," Stewart added. "The key is to try to get everybody to play to the magic level. We're just struggling to find something we can hang our hat on from game to game."
For the game, UC Davis shot 33 percent compared to Long Beach State's 50 percent. The 49ers shot 53 percent (10-for-19) from beyond the arc, including 6-for-8 in the second half.
UC Davis next faces UC Irvine Wednesday in Irvine. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:05 p.m., and the game can be heard on KSAC 1240-AM and www.ucdavisaggies.com.
