CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Jee Park fired back-to-back rounds of 74 on Tuesday and is tied for ninth place as the UC Davis women's golf team made its debut as a varsity program by ending the first day of competition at the Oregon State Invitational with a solid eighth-place showing.
Women's golf is the 26th varsity sport at UC Davis and is coached by Kathy DeYoung, who led the Aggie softball program to nearly 800 wins and the 2003 NCAA Division II Championship before retiring from that sport in 2004 to help start up the golf program. The tournament is the first-ever competition for the program.
UC Davis, fielding a lineup of all true freshmen, was in fifth place after firing a team score of 301 in Tuesday's opening round. The Aggies posted a score of 310 in the afternoon and are at 611, just one shot behind seventh-place Idaho and five shots back of sixth-place Penn State. Brigham Young has a six-stroke lead over Washington State and a seven-shot advantage over the host Beavers. UC Irvine is in third at 598 and Oregon is in fifth at 599. Fifteen teams are in the tournament. UC Davis is two shots ahead Portland State.
Park shot 2-over 74 in both rounds on Tuesday at the 6,260-yard Trysting Tree Golf Club and is tied for ninth place after 36 holes. Danielle Cvitanov is tied for 30th at 10-over 154, Eryn Williams is one shot behind her and tied for 33rd, Brittany Smith is at 157 and tied for 44th and Kelsey Fischer is tied for 55th at 161. Smith had a team-best 73 after the first 18 holes and was tied for fifth.
UC Davis posted just three rounds of at least 80 among the 10 rounds it played.
The final 18 holes will be played on Wednesday.
