ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. - Freshman Danielle Cvitanov has a two-shot lead after shooting a three-under-par 70 on Monday, helping UC Davis to first place after the first round of the Cal Poly Invitational, being played at the 6,019-yard Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande.
UC Davis, which shot a team score of 297, leads second-place Santa Clara by five strokes. Portland is in third at 310, Sacramento State is fourth at 311 and Northern Colorado, Northern Arizona and Cal Poly are tied for fifth at 312. Fourteen teams are competing in the tournament.
Cvitanov fired a 38 over the front nine of the course and had an impressive 32 on the back for her tournament-low 70. She is trying to win her first tournament after already finishing second in mid-October at the Bronco Fall Invitational at Boise State.
Cvitanov is one of five Aggies in the top 10 of the individual standings, a group that also includes Jee Park, Bryana Gregory and Kelsey Fischer. Park is tied for seventh after shooting 2-over 75 while Gregory and Fischer are tied for 10th after opening the two-day tournament with 76s.
Brittany Smith, playing as an individual, rounds out the Aggie quintet in the top 10. She fired 37s on both the front and back nines at Cypress Ridge and is tied for fifth at 74. UC Davis' Bryn Williams shot 81 and is tied for 39th.
The Aggies are playing their fourth and final event of the fall season and are looking to pick up their second tournament title in just their first year of competition. UC Davis, comprised of all true freshmen, won the Bronco Fall Invitational by three strokes.
Margaux Sheehan of Sacramento State and Samantha Trask of Santa Clara are tied for third in the individual standings at 73.
