Late Run Pushes Hornets Past Aggies

DAVIS, Calif. - Sacramento State used a 19-9 run over the final 4:51 to rally past UC Davis, 72-67, Wednesday night in men's basketball action at The Pavilion in Davis, Calif. The game featured a 21-point swing after UC Davis trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half before taking a five-point lead with 5:23 remaining in the game. The Aggies were led by Vince Oliver, who scored 22 points. Rommel Marentez scored 14 points, and Thomas Juillerat finished with 13. Sacramento State's DaShawn Freeman led all scorers with 24 points.

Sacramento State (4-2) dominated the first 14 minutes of the game, leading 31-15 after a layup by Alex Bausley with 6:00 to play in the half. UC Davis (0-4) would get as close as 12 points before trailing 38-25 at the half.

In the second half, UC Davis began to chip away at the lead. A three-pointer by Jesse Lopez Low at the 16:28 mark made it 42-33. After the Hornets regained an 11-point lead, the Aggies put together an 8-0 run, capped off by a Juillerat layup with 11:05 to play.

Sacramento State came back with a 5-0 run and led 51-43 less than two minutes later. The Aggies then scored the next six points, including two free throws by Phil Rasmussen with 8:05 to play to make it 51-49.

After a jumper by Jason Harris gave Sacramento State a 53-49 lead, the Aggies went on a 9-0 run in a span of 2:16. The streak started with an Oliver trey. A layup by Juillerat with 6:18 to play gave the Aggies a 54-53 lead, their first advantage since the 18:01 mark of the first half. Marentez converted two free throws 30 seconds later to make it 56-53, and Lopez Low's layup at the 5:27 mark gave UC Davis a 58-53 lead.

After a three-pointer by Haron Hargrave with 3:48 remaining, the Hornets had the lead back at 59-58. Less than a minute later, Juillerat went 2-for-2 from the line to give the Aggies what turned out to be their last lead of the night at 60-59.

Sacramento State went on a 7-0 run and led 66-60 with 1:08 remaining. The Aggies would get as close as three points twice in the closing minute but never had a the ball again with a chance to tie the game.

The Hornets finished the game shooting 51 percent from the field and 47 percent (8-for-17) from beyond the arc. UC Davis was 46 percent from the field and 29 percent (5-for-17) from beyond the arc. The game was physical most of the night with the teams combining for 43 fouls. It also included the ejection of Sacramento State's Justin Williams after a flagrant foul with 5:47 left in the game.

Rasmussen, who finished with four points, led the Aggies with nine rebounds and five assists. Lopez Low grabbed eight boards while Juillerat and Marentez dished out four assists each.
