Aggies Defeated In Season Opener

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - UC Davis (0-1) was defeated by Northern Arizona, 78-50, Saturday afternoon in Flagstaff, Ariz. The Aggies, in their season opener, battled back from a 21-point first half deficit and trailed by just seven with 13:04 to play. The Lumberjacks, though, closed the game outscoring the Aggies 31-10. Phil Rasmussen led UC Davis with 14 points. NAU's Kyle Landry led all scorers with 15.

NAU (2-2) came out strong offensively and defensively, holding the Aggies to just three field goals in the first 13 minutes of the contest. It was 6-0 before Thomas Juillerat connected at the 15:43 mark to get UC Davis on the scoreboard. The Lumberjacks continued to dominate, though, going on a 13-2 run over the next eight minutes and led 19-4 with 7:47 remaining in the half.

The Aggies committed 14 first half turnovers, which resulted in Northern Arizona taking as much as a 32-11 lead at the 4:02 mark.

UC Davis would finally find consistency offensively in the half's final four minutes. Rasmussen scored eight of his 10 first half points during what would be a 14-6 run for the Aggies to close the half trailing 38-25.

As the second half began, it looked like NAU was poised to regain its earlier dominance. The Lumberjacks scored the first six points to take a 44-25 and force UC Davis into a timeout. After that, the Aggies rolled off 11 straight points and trailed by just eight points at the 16:05 mark.

UCD Davis would get as close as 47-40 with 13:04 to play when a Juillerat bucket capped off a 15-3 run. That's when NAU closed the door, holding the Aggies without a field goal for the nearly 11 minutes. UC Davis would trail by as many as 30 points and converted just two field goals the rest of the way.

UC Davis shot 35 percent from the field while the Lumberjacks were 55 percent. The Aggies committed 21 turnovers and were 1-for-13 from beyond the arc.

Juillerat finished with 12 points, and Vince Oliver scored eight. UC Davis never led.
