RENO, Nev. - Three UC Davis individuals and the women's 4x400-meter relay team collected provisional qualifying marks for the 2002 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships at competitions Saturday at the University of Nevada and Boise State.
The Aggies' achievements came at the Wolf Pack Invitational hosted by Nevada and at the United Heritage Invitational at Boise State, as UC Davis split its teams to compete at the different sites. The Aggie men's and women's teams were eighth each at Reno.
Additionally, sophomore Kelli Enos broke her week-old record in the 55-meter dash, slicing one-hundredths of a second to finish 11th in 7.30 seconds at the Wolf Pack Invitational.
At Reno, Heather Modesti surpassed the "B" standard for the women's pole vault, finishing seventh at 11 feet, 5.75 inches, more than four inches above the qualifying mark of 11-1.25. She was one of two Aggie vaulters to earn a "B" mark at Reno, joining Matt Chisam of the men's team who was 12th at 15-7, two inches above the provisional mark.
At Boise, UC Davis earned two more qualifying marks. Senior Sopagna Eap placed third in the mile in 5 minutes, 3.35 seconds, just behind winner Melissa McBain of UCLA and nearly two seconds under the"B" standard of 5:05.00. UC Davis also provisionally qualified its 4x400 relay squad of Kalani Holleman, Amanda Medrano, KatieNash and Amber Taylor, which crossed the line in 3:54.07, just under the "B" standard of 3:55.60.
UC Davis enjoyed several strong finishes on Saturday. At Reno, Kyle Auclair finished second in the long jump at a personal-best 22-7, Ben Forbes was eighth in the high jump at 6-5, Marikka Mehserle was fourth in the triple jump at 36-9.5 and Amy Tran was seventh at 34-6.25.
At Boise, UC Davis finished fifth through seventh in the women's 400 with Rochelle Carter (57.57), Katie Nash (58.40) and Kalani Holleman (58.49) helping the Aggies to a strong showing in the event. Steve Laurie had another strong performance for UC Davis, finishing second in the 5,000 at 15:22.69. Jak Kuehn was 10th in the mile, finishing in 4:30.96.
Enos broke her own school record in the 55 meters, one week after going 7.31 to best the previous mark of 7.30 set by Cori Evans (7.39) in 1996.
UC Davis returns to action next Saturday, splitting its squad again for meets at Reno for the Bill Cosby Indoor Invitational and at Los Angeles for the Sunkist Indoor Invitational.
