Jan. 10, 2003

KINGSVILLE, Texas - UC Davis wide receiver Michael Oliva led all receivers with seven catches for 128 yards on Friday and was named the game's offensive most valuable player, but his West squad came up short on the scoreboard as the East posted a 19-7 win during the Whataburger Cactus Bowl All-Star Game, hosted by Texas A&M-Kingsville.

The game matched the top NCAA Division II seniors. UC Davis offensive tackle Michael Gross and cornerback Carnell Green also participated in the game. Green finished with three assisted tackles and broke up a pass.

For Oliva, it marked his third straight game with at least 100 yards receiving in Javelina Stadium. During the 2001 NCAA Playoffs he had a school-record 233 yards receiving against Kingsville and then followed that with 167 during the 2002 postseason. He had 528 total receiving yards in three games at Kingsville.

Oliva highlighted his game with a catch of 30 yards from Texas A&M-Kingsville quarterback Abel Gonzalez during the first quarter on Friday, had two other catches for 23 yards and another for 22.

Linebacker Steve Josue of Carson-Newman (Tenn.) was named the game's defensive MVP.
