The back-half of UC Davis' season-opening homestand will take place Friday evening when San Diego visits the Pavilion. Not only is this the Aggies' second West Coast Conference opponent in as many games, this is their first home game against the Toreros since the 1978-79 season.
Since that year, when the teams split their season series by defeating the other on their home court, these teams only met on one occasion: Dec. 15, 2015.
This is the last opportunity for UC Davis men's basketball fans to watch the Aggies compete on Hamilton Court until Northern Arizona visits on Nov. 29. In between Friday's game, and that matchup against the Lumberjacks are games at Arkansas (Nov. 12), a pair of games at UT Arlington against the host school (Nov. 18) and Texas A&M Corpus Christi (Nov. 17), the annual Causeway basketball game at the Golden 1 Center against cross-Causeway rival Sacramento State (Nov. 20), and the team's inaugural visit to Indiana (Nov. 23).
Since a lengthy road swing awaits them, the Aggies are focused on earning a split of its inaugural homestand of the season against a San Diego squad that opened its season with a home victory vs. Weber State on Tuesday.
Men's basketball's season opener marked the debuts of five Aggies: juniors Matt Neufeld
, Stefan Gonzalez
and freshmen Gio Nelson
, Caleb Fuller
, and Damion Squire
. Each one of these individuals showcased their talents in front of the Aggie faithful for the first time, and are eager to enjoy their first victory in a UC Davis uniform on their home court.
As is the case with UC Davis, a team with four returning starters on its roster, four senior starters will lead San Diego's efforts against the defending Big West Conference champions. Collectively, that Torero foursome is responsible for 81 percent of the team's scoring last season, and are expected to carry the load for first year head coach Sam Scholl.
A stream of Friday's game is available on BigWest.TV; fans can also listen to play-by-play commentator Greg Wong's courtside call on 1380 AM KTKZ or by clicking the Audio link above.
