Cadona, Carney, Lotoszynski are clutch at Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. - Freshman left-hander Sara Cadona turned in one of her best pitching performances of the season after allowing zero earned runs as UC Davis' starting pitcher in the second game of Tuesday's road doubleheader against the Golden Bears. Trailing 4-1 heading into the top of the ninth, Alexis Carney's two-out double to left drove in Brianna Warner, but it was Ashley Lotoszynski's blast to the bleachers in left field that tied the game at 4-4.

With two outs and Cal runners on second and third, it was a hard-hit ground ball that snuck under a diving Lotoszynski at short that allowed the host team to escape with a 5-4 victory over UC Davis, and complete its sweep after winning the first game, 4-0.

With their 2016 non-conference schedule now completed, the Aggies will return to Big West action on Saturday, at Cal Poly, with a 14-27 overall record. Cal will continue its season with a 25-18-1 record.

After dropping a hard-fought game, the Aggies scored first in the following contest when Taiya McInnes hit a two-out RBI single to right field, in the first inning, which allowed Taylor Peters, who reached base on a single to third with one out, to score.

Cadona kept Cal off the scoreboard for the first three innings, but two Aggie errors and a walk loaded the bases with one out. A triple to right field just a handful of pitches later allowed Cal to take a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Cal scored another run, on two UC Davis miscues, to take a 4-1 lead into the final inning.

After Warner drew a six-pitch walk, Carney drove in the Aggies' second run on a two-out RBI double to left center, pulling her team within striking distance before Lotoszynski's first home run of the season swing momentum to UC Davis.

Cal started its half of the seventh with a leadoff single, but it was the sixth error of the game that placed the Aggies in a precarious situation. A groundout to first advanced both Cal runners another 60 feet before Leah Munden recorded the second out on a grounder to short.

Even though Cal shutout the Aggies, game one was a lot more competitive than it may look on paper; all but one of the Golden Bears' runs were scored with two outs, and a career-high effort from Ontiveros was the reason why UC Davis did not convert on its most dangerous scoring opportunities.

In the first inning, Cal hit a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead, a score that remained untouched until the bottom of the third when a leadoff single, an Aggie error, and a run-saving play (at that time) set up the Golden Bears' second scoring opportunity of the game.

On a hard-hit ball to left center, both Warner and Peters ran towards the fence in an effort to record the first out of the frame. Due to her speed, Warner was able to make a play on the ball; as it flew over her shoulder, she reached out and saw it fall into, then pop out of her glove. Fortunately for UC Davis, Peters never gave up on the play and was able to snare the ball before it hit the ground.

Even though a Golden Bear runner advanced from second to third on the play by tagging up, the tandem of Warner and Peters successfully prevented what would otherwise have been a surefire run.

However, on the subsequent at bat, Cal was able to plate that run on a successful double steal.

In the fourth and the sixth, Carney started each inning with a single through the left side of the infield. She advanced to scoring position when Lotoszynski drew a walk in the fourth; the sixth inning saw Katie Robertson push Carney to second on a single down the left field line.

On both occasions, UC Davis was unable to advance to third; the main reason why was Cal starting pitcher Nisa Ontiveros, who recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts.

Leading 2-0 through three innings, the Golden Bears tacked on another run in the fourth and sixth innings, turning a 2-0 score into the game's final result.
