NOTES
TO RECAP: UC Davis (2-4) picked up its first two wins of the year, gaining 3-0 sweeps of Radford and Princeton at the George Washington Invitational... The Aggies held their opponents to season-low hitting averages of .080 and .032 in those matches, thanks to 22.0 total blocks... Senior OH Kaylin Squyres (46 kills, 44 digs, eight blocks), junior OH Allie Wegener (29 kills, 12 aces, 24 digs) and redshirt freshman MB Kelechi Ohiri (.619 hitting, 16 blocks) earned all-tournament honors... Half of Wegener's aces came against host GW, the highest single-match total by an Aggie since setter Katelyn Astruc served up seven in four sets at UC Riverside in 2005... Kristi Zappen's school record of eight (at College of Notre Dame in 1990) reigns as the longest-standing individual record in program history.

Although only six matches into 2015, Ohiri's career trajectory has matched that of teammate Aima Eichie last season: relative newcomer to volleyball, redshirted her first season, then earned starting MB role in her second... In a non-volleyball coincidence, both players' families originally hail from Nigeria... In 23 sets so far, Ohiri has hit .421 (29-5-57) with 32 blocks (1.39)... Through Sunday's matches, Eichie and Ohiri rank first and third in blocks per set in the Big West Conference (see below for more).

YOUNG GUNS: Several true freshmen have supplied significant numbers in the early going, and three have played in all 23 sets... Setter Maddie Merlino has averaged 5.30 assists per frame as Sophia Mar's platoon-mate in the Aggies' 6-2 offense... Libero Malia Bolko leads UC Davis with 94 digs (4.09)... She surrendered just two service aces in 83 passes (.976) at the GW Invite; in fact, the Aggies only allowed six as a team... OPP Nicola Moore has hit .260 with 15 blocks... On top of that, OH Emily Allen has seen action in 21 sets as a serving specialist, while MB Lauren Jackson posted a season-best five blocks in Saturday's sweep of Princeton.

BIG WEST STAT RANKINGS: Squyres ranks second in the Big West in both kills (99) and kills per set (4.30)... She led the circuit in both categories in 2014... Bolko's 4.09 digs per set ranks third... Eichie (1.54) and Ohiri (1.39) sit first and third in the Big West in blocks, with only Hawai'i's Olivia Magill (1.52) preventing the exacta... As such, the Aggies are second as a team at 3.00 bps... Wegener took over the top spot at 0.59 aces per frame, thanks to the 10 served in the last two matches.

UP NEXT: UC Davis continues its two-week road trip in the Cornhusker State, facing Omaha in a midweek match before heading to Lincoln for the Ameritas Players Challenge... Nebraska (Friday), Georgia Tech (Saturday) and South Florida (Saturday) are first-time opponents, while UC Davis and UNO split a pair of meetings back when both were strong Division II programs.

OMAHA (2-4) beat North Dakota then lost to Drake and UCF at its own Omaha Classic last weekend... Senior MB Megan Schmale hit 17-1-25 (.640) with eight blocks against Drake before adding a team-best 11 kills against the Knights that evening... Senior OH Kelley Wollak (14 kills, 20 digs) and senior RS Michaela Schimmer (15 kills, 17 digs) each had offense-defense double-doubles against UND... The Mavericks continue to host volleyball at Sapp Fieldhouse, with the brand-new Baxter Arena slated to host its first match in November.

NEBRASKA (4-1) slipped half a spot in the national poll after splitting the VERT Challenge with a five-set loss to No. 3 Texas and a five-set win against No. 11 Oregon... The `Huskers trailed 2-0 in the match before winning three straight to upend the Ducks, marking the first time since 2008 that NU has had such a comeback against a Top-15 team... Senior OH and 2014 honorable mention All-American Kelsey Fien notched a career-best 19 kills against UO... She has 3.55 kps and a .352 hitting average... Junior OH Kadie Rolfzen (3.44 kps, .290 average) has made the AVCA All-America third team in each of the last two seasons.

GEORGIA TECH (7-1) has won six straight matches, with only an Aug. 28 five-set loss to Coastal Carolina preventing a perfect preseason so far... The Yellowjackets swept Mercer, Georgia Southern and Georgia at the Georgia Challenge over the weekend, then tacked on a four-set win over Auburn on Sunday... Junior OH Teegan Van Gunst earned ACC Co-Player of the Week honors thanks to 51 kills over the weekend... She paces GT with 3.67 kps, .338 hitting and 83 digs... Sophomore MB Sydney Wilson has a team-leading 33 blocks with a .325 average in 27 sets this year.

SOUTH FLORIDA (2-4) has lost four straight since opening the 2015 season with sweeps of Alabama A&M and North Florida... Senior LB Wylie Devlin made The American's weekly honor roll with 57 digs (5.7 dps) at the USF Classic... The Bulls lost to Arkansas State, Florida Gulf Coast and Missouri during their home-opening weekend... Junior OH Dakota Hampton (57 kills, 65 digs) and junior RS Alexus Heidelberg (47 kills, .261) lead USF offensively
