Nov. 30, 2015 DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis women's volleyball player Kelechi Ohiri captured Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for the period ending November 29, according to the league office Monday afternoon.
A redshirt freshman middle blocker from Elk Grove, Ohiri tied a career high of 12 total blocks in Tuesday's season-ending victory against Cal Poly. That mark shares second place in the school record book while her 10 block assists is tied for third. Ohiri, who added seven kills and a .385 average in the win, previously notched 12 total blocks against Baylor on August 30.
This is the fourth week in which at least one Aggie claimed a conference weekly award, and the third that UC Davis boasted the Defensive Player of the Week. Libero Malia Bolko won that honor on October 5 then again on November 9. Senior Kaylin Squyres took home the overall Player of the Week nod on October 5, then junior Kendall Walbrecht snared it a week later.
The announcement comes just hours after Ohiri being named to the Big West Conference All-Freshman Team. She finished the season with team highs of a .333 average and 98 total blocks despite missing nine matches in the middle of the season. UC Davis finished 15-15 overall with a fourth-place Big West record of 10-6.
