Final Stats
DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis was defeated by No. 13 Cal, 3-1, Wednesday in a non-conference softball game at La Rue Field. The Bears scored twice in the second and one more time in the fifth. Marissa Araujo scored the lone run for UC Davis (21-27). The win improved Cal to 33-15 on the year.
One of the two Bears' runs in the second was unearned. The first came home on a single by Vernae Sevilla, and the second scored on a force-out to put Cal on top 2-0.
In the bottom of the second, Araujo reached first on a passed ball and eventually came home to score when Rachel Miller reached on an error to pull the Aggies within 2-1.
The Bears threatened again in the fourth by loading the bases with no outs. However, Aggie reliever Kociemba pitched out of the jam with a pop-up double play and a fly ball to end the inning. Cal added an insurance run in the fifth when Bernice Masaniai led off with a solo homer to increase the lead to 3-1.
UC Davis threatened in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and the bases empty. Miller reached on a fielding error before Holmes singled to put runners at first and second. Belinda Paine then had a lengthy at bat ended by a groundout.
The Bears outhit the Aggies, 7-3. Julie Stauder, Sarah Axelson and Holmes all had singles for UC Davis. Jessica Hancock pitched the first three innings-plus for the Aggies while Kociemba and Holmes each pitched two innings. Hancock and Kociemba allowed just one earned run apiece, and Holmes did not allow a hit in the final two frames.
UC Davis returns to action Saturday when it opens a three-game Big West Conference series at UC Santa Barbara. The two teams will play a doubleheader followed by Sunday's finale.
